It is said that the road may have been named after the Hindu goddess Chitteshwari, in whose honour a temple was built by a Bengali aristocrat. Conflicting stories say that it was named to honour a group of artists- chitrakars, or scroll painters- who built a home there. As one of the oldest roads in Calcutta, the formerly aristocratic street may be decayed and crumbling but it hasn't lost its historic relevance. Here is an old artwork from the city on your morning coffee mug.
