Shakuntala, one of his most iconic creations, is inspired by a love story in the Mahabharata, but popularised by Kalidasa’s epic of the same name. In this piece, Varma painted Shakuntala as she pretends to remove a thorn from her foot. Secretly, Shakuntala is looking for her lover, Dushyantha.
